Understand the boards before choosing the method
Timber and composite decking should not be treated as interchangeable surfaces. A painted or oiled timber deck also presents different questions from bare boards. David begins the conversation with the material, finish and visible condition, so tell us what you know about the deck and its previous maintenance.
If boards are loose, split or deteriorated, flag that before a cleaning appointment. Cleaning is not a structural repair. A deck that feels unstable needs an appropriate assessment before someone works on or uses it.
Photos that help us quote
Include the full deck, a close view of the surface, steps and any balustrade. Mention the approximate dimensions and whether furniture or heavy planters can be moved. If you have product information for composite boards or a coating, send the care instructions.
Tell us where the main build-up occurs. A shaded strip beside a wall, the area beneath furniture and an open walking route may have different amounts of surface contamination.
A clean is not a new finish
Cleaning removes suitable surface build-up; it does not automatically restore faded colour, repair splinters or replace a coating. Re-oiling, staining and repairs should be discussed separately rather than assumed to be included.
Avoid planning a new coating immediately after cleaning without checking the product’s drying and preparation requirements. Ask the product supplier or installer for the correct process for the particular material and finish.
Keep the visit straightforward
Clear small items where possible and tell David about electrical fittings, low sockets or inaccessible sections. Children and pets should stay away from the working area. Follow the agreed reopening advice rather than judging readiness only by appearance.
If decking sits beside a paved terrace, include both in your enquiry. The patio cleaning plan can then be considered alongside the boards, with appropriate treatment for each.
