Compare the process, not just the name
“Roof cleaning” is an umbrella term. It does not tell you whether a contractor plans to use compressed air, manual tools, water pressure or a chemical treatment. Ask which stage each method is intended to perform.
David’s stated approach is the Airscrape airpole system. Its mechanical moss-removal stage uses compressed air. This is distinct from directing a pressure-washing water jet at the roof surface.
Dry removal is not the same as treatment
A roof can have both larger moss growth and residual organic staining. Removing the larger material and applying a suitable treatment are different stages. The word “dry” describes the removal process here; it should not be interpreted as a promise that any later treatment contains no water.
The equipment manufacturer’s Airpole overview is a source for the system’s basic operation. Ask David how the proposed stages apply to your own roof, rather than assuming every installation follows an identical specification.
The roof still needs assessing
No equipment name makes a damaged roof suitable for cleaning. The covering, age, visible defects and access must be considered. Tell the contractor about leaks, repairs and fragile areas before work is agreed.
If a roof product has specific care instructions, share them. The appropriate method for one covering is not automatically right for another. A quote should explain the approach in terms you understand.
Questions worth asking
Ask where the operator will work from, how the roof edge and gutters will be protected, how removed material will be collected and whether treatment is included. If pressure washing is proposed by another contractor, ask them to explain its suitability for the particular covering.
Avoid choosing solely on an absolute claim such as “zero risk” or “safe on every roof”. A useful answer explains the property-specific precautions and limitations.
