Good preparation starts before the appointment
The most helpful preparation is a clear conversation about the property. Tell David about shared driveways, narrow passages, locked gates and anything that could limit access. Include photographs when you enquire so arrangements can be discussed before a date is agreed.
Do not assume the contractor can move every obstacle on arrival. Heavy planters, fixed furniture and delicate garden features should be mentioned in advance.
The day-before checklist
- Confirm which surfaces are included and which are outside the scope.
- Agree where vehicles will be parked and which access routes need to stay clear.
- Move loose garden items where practical.
- Tell the contractor about outdoor electrical equipment and vulnerable fittings.
- Discuss nearby ponds, planting and rainwater collection if treatment is proposed.
- Make arrangements for children and pets to stay away from the working area.
Roof work needs a wider view
For roof cleaning, the space below the roof matters too. A conservatory, low extension, garden room or neighbour’s boundary can affect access and protection. Send photos of these features, even if the roof itself is the main reason for the enquiry.
Any known leaks, loose covering or recent repair should be mentioned before the method is chosen. A cleaning visit is not a substitute for a repair assessment.
Patios, drives and decking
Explain the material and existing finish if you know it. Recent sealants, painted boards or manufacturer’s instructions can change the appropriate approach. Point out loose paving, failed joints or damaged boards rather than leaving them to be discovered during work.
Check when the surface can be used again. A surface that looks dry is not always ready for furniture or a subsequent coating, and the answer depends on the work and product involved.
Afterwards
Follow the specific aftercare provided for the agreed service. If there is a concern, describe it and send a photograph taken safely. Keep the quote and any written instructions together so that the scope is easy to refer to.
